The All Star break is behind us and the next big stop on the MLB calendar is July 31st the trade deadline. As we approach the deadline there are tons of names in play.
No matter what website you go for your rumors and breaking news about the deadline the name that will continuously pop up is Roy Halladay’s.
The man they call “Doc” has been the ace of the Toronto Blue Jays and one of the most dominating pitchers in league for as long as we all can remember.
Well now Halladay is officially on the market and every team in the league would love to add this guy but not everyone has the resources and the money to acquire Halladay. There are a number of teams that are interested in acquiring Halladay.
The New York Mets were thought to have an offer that was shot down by Mets GM Omar Minaya. The deal that was in place was Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell, and Ruben Tejada to the Jays for Roy Halladay. Looking at this deal there is no way that Omar Minaya would have turned down this deal. It was later reported by multiple media outlets that this deal was just a rumor and false. If the Mets were to land Roy Halladay they would have the best tandem in baseball with Johan Santana and Roy Halladay topping the current best tandem of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants.
I believe that the Mets are the front runners to acquire Halladay. But this move would have to be for next year, when the Mets can come back healthy and take a run at winning the World Series.
The Boston Red Sox are another team involved in the Roy Halladay saga. If the Red Sox were to acquire Halladay they would be the most lethal team in all of baseball. There is no way to get past a rotation of Beckett, Lester, Wakefield, Penny, and Halladay.
Clay Buchholz would have to be the one big piece that the Red Sox would have to give up plus a number of their other top prospects. I doubt that the Jays really want to trade their ace to another team in the AL East, this would further stunt the grow of this Jays team by allowing the top teams in the AL East to get stronger. But if there are no other options out there then they may be force to trade within the division and the Red Sox should not even think twice about giving up Buchholz, it’s a no brainier to get rid of this kid. He has become vastly overrated due to his no hitter a couple years ago.
The New York Yankees are the last of the 3 teams that I believe to make a push for Roy Halladay. The Yankees have had problems with their pitching staff so far this year which has been plagued by injury and inconsistency but it is starting to look better for the Yankees. For the Yankees to have any shot at Roy Hallday they must be willing to part with Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes.
There is a 100% chance that the Yankees will sit back and watch Roy Halladay be traded elsewhere. There is no way that they give up either Hughes or Chamberlain, especially since they wouldn’t part with either for Johan Santana. These guys have come into their own and finally look like they could start living up to their expectations. Chamberlain has been better in his last couple starts in which he has been attacking the strike zone more. I still believe that Chamberlain’s destiny lies in the bullpen where he showed that he was nearly unhittable. Mitch Williams of MLB Network seems to agree since he is up in arms whenever the bullpen or rotation discussion comes up. Phil Hughes was ok in the rotation showing improvement but he has flourished in the bullpen. The Yankees will not part with either one of these guys to acquire Hallday.
