This has been a very boring off-season to say the least. No big trades, no big news; people clamoring over every single bit of information they can get their hands on no matter what the source or how big it is.
This latest information may send you into bewilderment but it's worth reading about. 47 year old defenseman Chris Chelios may be interested in signing with the New York Rangers.
No, this is not a joke; not a pun on the Rangers operating a retirement home where former stars can play their final years and then ride off into the sunset. This is true.
In an article from Arizona Central, an interview was conducted with Jeremy Roenick who may be soon announcing his retirement. Later in the story, Roenick went on to talk about his good friend Chelios and had this to say regarding next season:
"Chelly wants to play until he's 50. Chelly wants to play in New York, for the Rangers and Glen Sather. And I'll tell you this: No person had a bigger effect on my career."
Is Jeremy Roenick telling the truth here? We won't know for sure but what is certain is that Chelios' tenure in Detroit is over and there are not many teams that would be willing to take on the 47 year old veteran of 1645 NHL games.
If Chelios would take league minimum salary, he could be the epitome of a seventh defenseman. He would be playing 30-40 games while mentoring the large crop of youth that the Rangers have on defense that will be coming up though training camp that includes Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy, Mike McDonaugh, and Bobby Sanguinetti.
At first glance the move doesn't seem like it makes much sense, but for the right price, it couldn't hurt.
